Advancing Digitization and Collaboration in Aerospace

This October, I had the pleasure of joining industry peers at two important gatherings: ARINC’s Electronic Shop Findings Report (eSFR) Working Group and the ATA e-Business Forum. Both meetings came at a pivotal time because supply chain inefficiencies — whether related to shop findings reports or quality certifications — continue to impact airline performance, compliance, and costs. SmartCert is quickly advancing collaboration on required documentation to address these challenges.

For carriers, workshop reports are intended to improve communication between airlines, MROs, and service providers. But too often, this communication is hindered by paperwork bottlenecks that create inefficiencies and delays. Here are five pain points carriers share most often:

 

  1. Fragmented Communication
    Reports arrive in different formats — PDFs, spreadsheets, even scans. Each captures different levels of detail, forcing carriers to chase clarification and, in some cases, extend costly AOG events.
  2. Incomplete or Inconsistent Data
    Missing tail numbers, conflicting terminology, or limited details create inconsistencies that lead to rework and manual reconciliation.
  3. Lack of Real-Time Visibility
    Carriers often don’t see a shop findings report until the work is complete. That blind spot makes it hard to plan for return-to-service and increases downtime risk.
  4. IP Protection vs. Data Sharing
    MROs are understandably cautious about sharing too much detail. Carriers, however, need warranty and safety information. Without a structured way to balance transparency with IP protection, trust and efficiency break down.
  5. Audit and Compliance Pressure
    Regulators and lessors demand accurate, complete records. Manual reporting and missing fields increase the chance of findings and repeat requests — wasting time for both carriers and MROs.

A Smarter Path Forward

As I reflect on the eSFR Working Group and the ATA e-Business Forum, my focus is on
elevating and continuing this conversation. Carriers and MROs don’t need more paperwork —
they need structured collaboration that drives faster, cleaner, and more reliable reporting. If we
can align standards and best practices, we’ll move the entire industry closer to its shared goal:
keeping aircraft safely in the sky and passengers moving.
